A Brief History of Air Conditioners

Imagine having to sit through work without air conditioners. To appreciate the technological advances, we must first look into the past.

Ancient times:

The use of hand held fans dates back to 4th century BC as a tool to drive away insects from food like bread and wine. The Roman emperor Elagabalus built a mountain of snow in his pleasure garden by sending out slaves to collect snow.

The beginning:

Like most things before the invention of electricity, air conditioning was mechanical. It was Willis Carrier who devised the first prototype of an air conditioner, he is also known as the "Father of Air Conditioning." His air conditioner functioned on coils to generating cooling.

The early versions that started to appear in the 19th century were hefty and loud. As time passed, more accessible window air conditioners entered the market. It was a genuine luxury as only a few theaters and hotels had installed them. Theaters were one of the early patrons of the air conditioner upon their introduction.

Popularity:

By the 1940's and 50's; the air conditioner industry banked on business to use AC's to improve employee output. There was widespread debate on whether air conditioners were making workers lazy. But public approval and newspapers turned the tide and the air conditioner was accepted as a part of everyday life.

Present:

Air conditioners are a necessity in moderating temperature. Window air conditioners and the wall air conditioners are some of the more affordable versions. The technology has come a long way since the days of the hand held fans.

Split or Window Air Conditioners, Which suits you best?

Operational Setup:
Split AC:

The split AC or wall air-conditioned has two separate units. One unit is indoors which has the evaporator and the actual AC panel. The other unit is placed outside which has the condenser and compressor.

A copper tube connects the two systems. The outdoor unit requires a stand for it to be mounted on. The advantage when it comes to split AC systems is that one outdoor unit is enough for multiple indoor air conditioning units.

Window AC:

The window air conditioners have all the components as a single unit setup. It's installed in the window of a house or commercial space.

The compressor, motor, heat exchangers have the same operational unit.

Advantages
Split AC:

Lower noise levels when compared to window AC's as the compressor unit is ideally placed outside

Comparatively smaller and wall mounted as many prefer it that way

Window AC:

On the other hand the window AC has an all-in-one unit; this can be an advantage in the case of space limitations. It takes up limited spaces as it's mounted on the window frame

Quicker and easier installation

Easier to service as it's an all in one mechanism

Useful notes:

Look at your personal requirements, that more than anything has to be the deciding factor on the type of AC you buy

If a window pane isn't appropriately placed to fit a window AC, it's better to go for a split system. If you have space constraints outside regarding placing a split system. Try and opt for a window AC

Basic guide on how a window air conditioner functions

A window air conditioner unit is essentially engineered to fit through a standard window, this type is preferred by many as it essentially doesn’t take up any interior space of the room and fits in with the décor pretty easily.

Installing a window air conditioner is pretty easy as it involves removing the window cover and mounting the AC and securing it.

The main components of the air conditioners are:

  1. Compressor
  2. Condenser coils (hot coil)
  3. Evaporator coils (chilled coil)
  4. Fan units
  5. Thermostat unit

Basic Operational workflow

Step 1:

  • When you turn on the AC the thermostat in it sends 120 volts of electricity to the compressor

Step 2:

  • The compressor compresses the gas into the compressor coils where the gas turns into liquid
  • The condenser coils lets out heat as the hot fluid passes through them, this is why the rear end of the AC releases hot air during operation

Step 3:

  • From here the fluid reaches the evaporator coils (located in the front of the air conditioner) where the fluid expands into a gas which makes them cold hence air passing through is cooled and sent out as chilled air into the room

Step 4:

  • Side by side a fan motor rotates and draws in air to be cooled by the evaporator coils
  • The other fan draws in air from outside to cool the hot coils in the back

Step 5:

  • The thermostat assembly is in charge of the regulating the temperature

Note: There may be water collected at the bottom of the AC, which is normal during operation.

Why do we need Air Conditioners?

Air conditioner is much needed in today's world, be it a workplace or a home. Summer comes down with soaring temperatures and although our bodies can adjust to the temperature, it's an understatement to say it's a little uncomfortable.

Heating of the Atmosphere:

The major cause is energy, all the essential factors that take place to keep the atmosphere sustainable such as air movement patterns and the formation of clouds through evaporation of sea water leads to consumption and dispersion of heat energy. This is known commonly as radiation, the heat transfer that happens due to these processes leads to what is known as warming of the earth.

Need for regulated temperature:

Increased efficiency:

Regulation of temperature enables us to be relaxed. When one is comfortable and relaxed their efficiency is fully focused on what they do rather than the uncomfortable surroundings. When the room temperature is high, a lot of human energy is dispersed due to the stress it creates leading to the person being tired; this can be avoided by simply by mounting a wall air conditioner.

Health:

It's estimated that almost 70% of common ailments like the common cold and flu are transmitted through air, keeping the air clean inside an enclosure is instrumental when it comes to office spaces, window air conditioners can be a good option here. It is good choice to make.

Noise reduction:

Another advantage of having air conditioners is a quieter work environment, it allows people to think and perform better without any distractions

Latest Developments in Home Air Conditioning Systems

LG Air conditioners have occupied an integral part in home appliances. People living in hot and humid zones have found air conditioners as the most reliable option to stay away from heat and sweating discomforts. Being used over the last few decades, Air Conditioners have been modernized with lots of features to help users stay comfortable.

Here are a few features which are available in the modern AC systems;

Inverter Technology:

The inverter technology uses an inverter to control the speed of the compressor’s motor to regulate the temperature continuously. Inverter air conditioning also offers lower operating costs, quiet operation and increases the life of the AC unit.

Sensitive and Effective Filters:

Modern systems can reduce microscopic contaminants by engulfing germs and bacteria entering the AC. Also AC’s are built with allergy filters which can destroy house mites and particles which can cause allergic symptoms. Modern AC’s can also defend unpleasant odors and smoke smell.

Mechanism for rapid cooling:

This feature is enabled in modern AC’s to reduce the time for cooling a room to the required level. The rapid cooling mechanism accelerates cooling by working with the cooling motor of the AC.

Automatic adjustments while Sleep:

Now air conditioners can make automatic on/off, adjust its temperature and according to the time set by the user while sleeping. This is achieved by effective microcontroller programming techniques.

Effective Dehumidification:

Modern AC’s come with dehumidifying mode where, the AC fan is made to operate at a very low speed to have more contact with saturated air, thus ensuring complete dehumidification.

Counting all these incredible benefits it is time to update the air conditioning systems to a better standard to enjoy a pleasant and comfortable ambience.
